Recent News....
It is with great sadness that we heard last week of the death of Her Majesty The Queen. We pay tribute to the life and service of Her Majesty and join the nation in sending our deepest condolences to the Royal Family at this sad time. We have now entered a period of national mourning and this will continue until the end of the State Funeral.
The official date of the State Funeral is Monday 19th September 2022. This day will be a Bank Holiday and the school will be closed as a mark of respect.
The school will then re-open on Tuesday 20th September following the end of the official period of mourning.
Online Safety
The Welsh Government has launched a new ‘Online issues and worries’ area on Hwb specifically for children and young people. This new area includes information and advice on 10 different online safety topics. The new feature has been shaped by Welsh Government research into children and young people’s online experiences and worries and some of the barriers to getting help.
The advice is designed to help children and young people understand more about online safety and offer guidance on what to do and where to turn for help if they are worried about something online.
Please help us to raise awareness of ‘Online issues and worries’ area among children and young people so that they are supported to become digitally resilient and are empowered to deal with problems they may encounter online safely.
Parking
The community PCSOs have been visiting the school at drop off and collection times to help with traffic management.
We fully appreciate that the start and end of day is extremely busy, but please could all parents/carers continue to park in a safe and considerate manner, avoiding double yellow lines, neighbour’s drive ways, parking on kerbs or double parking.
The yellow ziz-zag lines, and areas next to the Zebra Crossing are also a no-parking zone; all for the safety of the children and wider school community.
Survey Reminder
We would like parents/carers to take a few moments to complete a survey to help us improve what we offer on a day to day basis.
Please follow this link to access the survey and share your thoughts with us:

Dinners & Breakfast Club
When we return after half term on Wednesday 9th June 2021, you will find some new additions to the lunchtime menu. The present choices will remain on the ParentPay system, but the children will also have the choice of burger/wedges and pasta bolognaise on certain days.
We have also managed to arrange a delivery of breakfast club items. From Wednesday 9th June, if you require your child to have a breakfast in school, then the children can go directly to their classes at 8.30am (this is the same arrangement as the Autumn term). School staff will provide the children with a breakfast grab bag before lessons begin.
It is important to note that breakfasts can only be served before lessons begin at 8.30am and not during lesson time.
Dear Parents/Carers,
From today, 1st March 2021, all school grounds in Wales will become smoke-free spaces.
As Wales becomes the first country in the UK to extend its smoking ban to certain outdoor areas, we are committed to improving the health of our children, families and staff by providing a smoke-free environment.
Smoking in smoke-free spaces – which not only includes school grounds, but also public playgrounds, outdoor day-care, child-minding settings as well as hospital grounds – from 1st March could result in a £100 fine. We also ask that no-one smokes in areas near to the school as families are entering or leaving the site.
We want to protect everyone from harmful second-hand smoke and we especially recognise the important role that adults have in influencing the attitudes and smoking behaviour of children and young people.
Many thanks to everyone,
The Oakfield Team
Dyddiad/Date: March 2021
Dear Parent/Guardian The Welsh Government has recently announced that it will start a programme of asymptomatic COVID-19 testing in education and childcare settings across Wales. Along with the primary protective measures we are taking, such as social distancing and good hand hygiene, testing will allow us to take further measures to help pupils and staff members to continue working in as safe an environment as possible. Up to one in three people who have COVID-19 have the virus without symptoms.
All staff are being asked to take part in twice weekly home testing using Lateral Flow Device tests. If the test is positive, staff and their close contacts will immediately need to start self-isolating, and a second test will be arranged to confirm the results. If the confirmation test is negative, all those who have been asked to isolate will be able to return to school. If the confirmation test is positive, the self-isolation period will continue for a total of 10 days. If a member of staff working with a pupil contact group records a positive LFT result, this may mean that pupils within the contact group will need to self-isolate.
Given the routine nature of the testing, this may mean that you may be notified that your child should not attend school at very short notice. If your child is required to self-isolate in the above circumstances and the staff member then receives a negative confirmation test result, they and close contacts, including pupils within the contact group, will be able to return to school and we will let you know this as soon as possible.
Your school will endeavour to keep you informed as quickly as possible.
Thank you for helping keep our pupils and staff safe. Yours sincerely Melanie Godfrey Director of Education and Lifelong Learning/ Cyfarwyddwr Addysg a Dysgu Gydol Oes
H&S Update: Lateral Flow Devices (LFD) in Schools
School based staff across Cardiff have been offered access to what is known as a Lateral Flow Device (LFD). This is a test that can be taken at home and will allow staff to know if they are carrying Coronavirus without realising it.
The tests will be taken on two occasions each week. If a member of staff has a positive LFD test, then the school will notify parents/carers from that class and advise if there should be a period of isolation.
The Local Authority will soon be sending out further details of how LFDs will assist in making our school communities safer and as soon as this information is received, we will forward it to everyone.
Thank you
Latest Updates & Information
Dear Parent/Carer,
On 29th January, the First Minister announced that if the number of coronavirus cases continued to fall over the following weeks then the intention would be for the youngest learners in primary schools to return to face to face learning from 22nd February 2021.
The latest published scientific briefing sets out the evidence and supports the phased return to more face to face learning in schools. This is supported by a statement by the Chief Medical Officer.
This phased approach needs to achieved safely and in a flexible manner. It will begin with the return to school of all foundation phase children from 22nd February 2021. Cardiff Education Authority are encouraging as many 3-7 year olds to return as soon as possible, so that all children will be back in school by Friday 26th February 2021. If your child is due to start nursery for the first time this term, then members of the nursery team will contact you by phone at some point this week.
Providing that the school has the capacity to do so, it will continue to provide an educational provision on-site for vulnerable children to safeguard their welfare and for the children of critical workers to ensure essential services can continue to function. Please see the school’s newsletters for further information on this.
From next half term, and until further notice, our KS2 children will continue to access a comprehensive package of distance/home learning led by their class teachers. Welsh Government will continue to review their reopening plans in the coming weeks and as soon as I have further information, then these plans will be communicated with the school community. In the meantime, please continue to check our Twitter feed, school website and ClassDojo notices for updates.
This continues to be an extremely challenging time for everyone and in light of the new variant there is still a need to adhere to strict control measures. It is important that outside of school all staff, children and their families continue to stay at home as much as possible and limit their contact with others. This will assist in the national prevention measures being followed in order to reduce the spread of the virus.
The school will be sharing full details of the return schedule tomorrow morning.
After half term, Parents/Carers of children in the foundation phase will need to follow appropriate measures when dropping children off in school such as the use of face coverings, adhering to social distancing measures and following school expectations. The intention is to proceed cautiously to ensure rates of COVID-19 do not start growing again.
Please stay safe and take care,
Mr. D Harris
