Croeso i Blwyddyn 1!
Welcome to Year 1!
The Year 1 class teachers are Miss Spriggs and Mr Ford (currently Mrs Haddall). We receive additional support from Mrs Joyner, Miss Gilligan and Mrs Haynes. We are also taught by Mrs Erickson and Mrs Zaman on a Tuesday Morning.
In Year One, the children follow the Foundation Phase Curriculum, where there are seven areas of learning:
1. Personal and Social Development, Well-being and Cultural Diversity
2. Language, Literacy and Communication
3. Mathematical Development
4. Physical Development
5. Welsh Language
6. Knowledge and Understanding of the World
7. Creative Development
Our topic this term is ‘Through the Keyhole’
where we will be learning about ourselves.
Personal and Social Development, Well-being and Cultural Diversity
This term, we are learning about what makes a good friend and how to keep ourselves healthy.
Language, Literacy & Communication
We will be developing our oracy, reading and writing skills. Pupils will be set into ‘SFA’ groups where we will practise our phonic sounds and develop our reading and writing skills. On a Thursday and Friday, we will have writing activities related to our topic.
Reading books will need to be brought to school every day in a red reading bag.
Mathematical Development
In Maths, we will learn about:
Physical Development
This term, we are developing our gymnastic skills. We will be learning ‘Body Actions and Shapes’ called Frog Hopping, Happy Cat and Angry Cat, Bunny Hopping and Foxes in our P.E. lessons.
Welsh Language
We will be using some Welsh words when we talk to our teachers and our friends. We are learning the Welsh terms for different colours, shapes and types of weather. We are also practising to ask and answer questions. These skills will be developed further in our daily Helpwr Heddiw sessions.
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
We will be naming and spelling the parts of the face and the body. We will then apply our phonic skills to describe ourselves in full sentences. Our class will also be using our five senses to investigate our environment.
This term, we will be looking at how we have changed since we were babies. Our class will be exploring our school using plans to help us locate areas and objects.
Creative Development
This term, we will be experimenting using different drawing equipment to make lined patterns. We will also practise our cutting skills and learn how to join materials. Through Pupil Voice, our class will plan, design and create during our D.T. project. We will listen to and create different sounds and there will also be a singing session every Tuesday afternoon.
It is also important that children progress in their IT skills and that this can be applied across our curriculum. Our IT topic this half term is ‘Our Digital World’ where we are learning how we can communicate by using a range of technology.
Remember that our Fruit Tuck is £1 a week and it will be collected on a Monday. Our P.E. lessons are on a Tuesday (Mrs Haddall) and Thursday (Miss Spriggs).
