Our paper recycling is going so well. 18 bags collected last week to put out for the recycling! Well done to all. Let's keep it up. Thank you 5TH for sorting the bags and taking to the bins.
This terms House competition was to design a Christmas wreath using recycled materials. Each hoarse worked very hard together and there was a lot of teamwork from pupils in Year 2 to Year 6. Well done to all but a huge well done to the winners Crickhowell.
Road Safety Week 20-26th November
Well done our Eco committee members for providing pupils with an informative assembly. You learnt lines, performed confidently and shared very important messages. Very proud of you.
At Oakfield, we are very proud to be an Eco School. A new School Council is elected in the Autumn term of each new academic year. Pupils who would like to participate write and perform their own short speech then are voted for by class friends. We have a representative from Years 2 to 6 and all have a very active role in Eco School activities. We have been creating a new action plan for this year. We have lots to do!!
We began by designing posters to remind adults not to smoke outside the school gates. These have now been printed off, laminated and are soon going to be on display in and around our wonderful school. The bans are voluntary and people won't be fined for breaking them but it is hoped smokers will observe the signs. Let us know what you think of our posters and enjoy the fresh air as you enter and leave school.
In the Autumn term we were thinking about saving electricity around the school. We went on secret missions at lunchtimes to see if computers and lights had been turned off, and they hadn’t be we would do it. We participated in the local ‘Ten Day Turn Down’ competition in October and were pleased to see how much energy we were saving by remembering to turn off electrical devices. Remember:
We are very keen to start recycling plastic on a larger scale at school now and our committee members have been busy investigating what we plastic we can recycle at school and the teachers and trying to organise suitable collectors.
We do use plastic water bottles a lot at school so it would be great to recycle these bottles rather than just put them in the bin. So we’re on a mission! Remember:
This year we will also be taking part in a ‘Big Tidy’. This will be a whole school event that will take place in the Summer term. We will send different year groups to different areas of St Mellons in order to help clean up the community. Foundation Phase can focus on the school grounds. We will be grateful of any parent help with this event. The children really enjoyed this event in previous years and it is a great way of us working with the community.
Look out for more details on how well we are doing on our school newsletters and please feel free to let us know any ideas you may have on how we can make Oakfield a more Eco-friendly school. We have the power to make a difference to the world.
We have now a new Eco Committee Council, although some members have stayed us with us luckily!! They all gave a short speech to their classes to say why they wanted to be on the Eco Committee and their friends voted for them. So a very big well done to them!! This year is going to be a busy one so we'll need to work as a team to make Oakfield an even better place!!
We have lots of meetings during our lunchtimes so pupils bring their lunches along too!! Here we all are reading through our scripts for our Road Safety assemblies.
